When I finally acquired a smartphone, the first customization I made was not set a song chunk as a ringtone, or snap a picture of my non-existent cat as the background, but was to download an ssh client app. With a new pocket digicam, I made three immediate changes:
1) Attached a wrist strap. (Badger's Second Rule of Photography: Lanyards are gold.)
2) Set the picture file mode to RAW.
3) Read the doc  to find the speaker setting to turn off all the beeps and noises and faux-shutter clicks and such.
 I read documentation as the technical writer version of professional courtesy.
