Like Half-Life headcrabs adapted to polar climes.
Posting prompted by reading DJ Spooky's The Book of Ice, the result of his spending a month in Antarctica and containing some gloriously bizarre graphic design work for a Peoples' Republic of Antarctica (nice review here). Points to Mr. Miller (DJ Spooky) for including Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" in his timeline history of the continent. Extra points for embedding QR codes in the graphic design of the book that smartphones can process as easter-egg URLs for access to extra content on the Web.
(The origin of the idea to take the photo is a Secret Teaching.)
