they baked a cake
Thursday evening I went to the Ubuntu Linux release party at The Crunkleton in Chapel Hill. The Crunkleton advertises roughly three hundred bottles of liquor on the wall ("...take one down, pass...) and the display was astonishing. But I digress. Small but enthusiastic crowd in a back room, installing the Natty Narwhal release of Ubuntu.

They baked a cake. Yes, they really did.

Back at the bar, I noticed that the Crunkleton had some cask-aged cocktails of the kind pioneered by Jeffrey Morgenthaler, founder of Repeal Day. So I tried a rye manhattan aged for five months in an oak barrel. It tasted bitter, and woody, and sharp, like drinking from an oak gall. It was excellent. I am now reconsidering my stance on single malts that taste like there's a hunk of peat left in the bottom of the bottle.

Stopped in to see friends on the way home. Great evening. Geeks, Linux, CAKE, a convenient used bookstore next door, and friends. Hoo rah.

Wish I'd caught this was happening sooner. We would have enjoyed seeing you, have been meaning to hit the Crunkleton for what I hear is an amazing gin selection, and local Ubuntu to boot. Bah. Next time. We appreciated the call though.

And that bookstore is frequently by-god wonderful. Plus, you can't help but love a place that threatens vampire clowns if you annoy the cats.
