Ada Lovelace Day

24 March - Ada Lovelace Day, "blog about a woman in technology you admire".

I had been planning to write about Delia Derbyshire [1] because "hey, Doctor Who theme!" but chose to go with the classic film actress Hedy Lamarr for her early work in radio:

Lamarr's and Antheil's frequency-hopping idea serves as a basis for modern spread-spectrum communication technology, such as COFDM used in WiFi network connections and CDMA used in some cordless and wireless telephones.

The patent filed in 1941.

Being directly behind the origin of the WiFi networks that I have used pretty much every day for many years and love not having to carry Ethernet cords everywhere with me, she gets the nod this year.
