Splunk, Scorpions, and Serious Men

Yesterday morning I woke up far too early concerned over possible flooding, dithered (ahem, "visualized the Cosmic All as fully as possible") then decided the water level was low enough to risk leaving for a few hours, return, and still get things moved in case the water rose alarmingly - normal is 1-2 feet, it was at 11, 18 puts water inside the house, and I have seen the water level gauges rise 2 ft per hour. So I had some time.

Went to RTP for the Splunk Live event demoing the new features in 4.0. The presentation was impressive, especially the custom dashboarding and reports they have going in 4.0, and the extension app that geolocates IP addresses to target suspected intrusion attempts in real time. I should clean up and post my notes, possibly on slideshare like [info]jay has been doing with his conference notes.

Returned to the house to find the water level slightly *down* and decided the forecast was fine for the house - barring heavy winds, big branches from overhanging trees, and a new roof.

Went to get crickets for the two baby scorpions and while I was there decided to bring the two adult black emperor scorpions home from the store - the last adult here at badgerhaus died a week ago, but I think I have a new strategy for improving their space here that I spent earlier this week setting up.

[info]maegwynn wanted to take me out somewhere but I decided to send her off to knitting as she likes seeing her friends there. We compromised with her driving me to the cupcake shop on Glenwood South as I had never told her what kind of cake I had wanted.

Had thought about going to have dinner at Raleighwood and _Inglorious Basterds_ again, but changed my mind (maybe this week) and went to see the Coen Brothers' new film _A Serious Man_. A very funny in a cringe and wince-inducing kind of way with a serious WTF moment (as in I thought that to myself), it's a bizarre disjointed piece of film. I may have to see it again just to try and force some of the pieces into some coherence. Here, read my friend Dan's review of _A Serious Man as he put more effort into his remarks.

Read through the last two weeks of the comics bag, some very good work this time around and it was nice to see Doc Savage show up on his birthday :), although I have no idea what this "First Wave" logo on the Batman/Doc Savage oneshot means in DC Comics continuity context. Took a long walk with the high winds at night which was very nice even with branches falling occasionally.

Today's remembrances:
Happy birthday to Robert Louis Stevenson from 1850, author of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and goodbye again to John Balance (Coil requiem).
