Samuel R. Delany at NCSU
The rain having been heavy all day but not yet heavy enough to cause panic (fretting, yes, but not panic) maegwynn and I went to NCSU Wednesday night to hear Samuel R. Delany read.
11/11/09 7:30 PM - Samuel Delany and the Fiction Contest Winners
Come find out who won NC State's 2009 Fiction Contests. Winners of the statewide contests for short fiction and short-short fiction were chosen by this year's judge, science fiction legend Samuel Delany, professor of English and Creative Writing at Temple University, and one of the most distinguished American writers and critics of the last 50 years. Delany will help announce the contest winners and will give a reading from his own work.
Based on that description I was expecting more of the event to be focused on the Fiction Contest, but the award portion of the event was surprisingly short (more than one of the recipients could not be present), the crowd was large (including several RTSFSers), questions were almost nonexistent, and he spent the majority of the time reading excerpts from his works - his most recently published novel _Dark Reflections_, two excerpts from his autobiographical work The Motion Of Light In Water, and part of the 1923 portion of Atlantis. Delany sounded wonderful as a storyteller, both maegwynn and I could listen to that voice for extended periods of time. A gracious and patient man, he indulged me in autographing the two works of his I had chosen to bring, and in holding still for a photograph.
Afterward went to a late and pleasant dinner with a small group of friends. A great evening. Now, what next to read?
