dharma bums of Durham
(In the "trying to catch up posting about events" category) A couple of weeks ago maegwynn and I were out to dinner in Durham and I noticed a flyer:
Having the midday free the next day I went and sat in. Eleven people attended, which I considered pretty good for a midday event with limited publicity. Attendees ranged from literature professors at one or another university embedded deeply enough in Kerouac scholarship that they could state that "soandso's correspondence with Kerouac is at that library's collection holdings" to people who just liked the guy's writing, people read chunks of Kerouac to each other that they had chosen for the occasion.
My friend Jim Kellough, who had arranged the Sun Ra performance and parade last August, turned out to be one of the organizers of the occasion.
Some of the readings were fascinating, more for the autobiographical remarks by the readers about themselves than the selections of Kerouac's words they shared - those I will tell offline but not here.
(The next day was the Michael Chabon reading so it was that kind of week.)
