Subscape Annex AAR

Spent Sunday finishing off the sound design for the play, then opened the house for a concert.

31 May (Sunday) - CJ Boyd (America), Jae (Norway), Small Life Form (Raleigh), Subscape Annex (Raleigh) - badgerhaus - Time 8pm sharp, free with donations requested for traveling performers

Small Life Form started close to 8:30, joined by slicnaton. Good stuff, glad Nic sat in at the last minute. I played next, using the Chapman Stick on the floor with two capos giving it open strings, and three E-Bows balanced for a drone, then used a bow on the Zeta electric upright bass. I should have recorded my set but didn't have the adapter cable within sight when I was ready to start. Should be better about that. More than one person said my set reminded them of helicopters. CJ (fourteen months into a tour that he expects will go another five months or so) played third with electric and other bass. Jae, a duo from Norway, played guitar and sang some nice melodies far removed from the atonal explorations more common to house shows here :).

I think the change I've made lately to moving the house show start time, especially on non-weekend nights, from a 9pm start to an 8pm start has been an improvement for the audience. Thanks to [info]andyhat, [info]jason0x21, [info]sylvia_wrath, [info]ovrclokd, a nearby neighbor who remembers me from the mid90s, and others for coming. A decent crowd for a Sunday night and for odd music. Thanks to everyone who came.

You're welcome, thanks for coming, it was good to see you and I appreciate the nice review in your post. I may go with a 9pm start time for weekend shows, maybe, but for weeknights the early start time seems to make life easier for people willing to come who couldn't possibly do even as for-a-club-early start time as 9:30 in Chapel Hill on a weeknight (CJ & Jae are playing the Nightlight tonight in Chapel Hill so that's a non-hypothetical example). The touring people definitely appreciated the hat fund, by the way - everyone was generous Sunday night.
