Catchup
Monday:
Last Monday I went to Duke card office to renew my WXDU pass card. Worked on music, mostly Chapman Stick.

Tuesday:
We went shopping at Barnes&Noble with gift cards, watched M pick up several knitting books. Didn't buy any, oddly enough: I'm trying to hack my to-read stack down a bit more before adding new ones. Almost picked up a DVD or two except that B&N gives Suncoast a run for most overpricing of DVDs.

Watched _Kingdom of Heaven_. Not bad. Depressing and not particularly historically accurate as I understand the Crusades, but at least Salah-al-Din didn't cry "Unleash Hell!" when commanding the flaming catapults. Pretty. And Jeremy Irons is always worth watching.

Wednesday:
Picked up comics, coffee. Watched the DVD of The Illusionist that I'd received a review copy of. Nice transfer: very clean, and even the fullscreen editing was handled ok in this edition (I normally prefer widescreen, and I'll probably go pick up a widescreen transfer soon.) The one annoying implausible aspect of the film for me (the chain and stone found in the stables after a month) works better in the director's commentary that it may have been planted after. I still like _The Prestige_ better, I think, but I'll recheck in a month or so when that DVD is released. But seeing Giamatti's performance in a different style than he normally works in was great.

Thursday:
Saw _Pan's Labyrinth_ and watched _Triumph of the Spirit_, a late 1980s film set in Auschwitz / Birkenau starring Willem Dafoe and Edward James Olmos as inmates.

Spent over an hour working on a live looping music project from existing samples. Recording device failed. Pfui.

Noticed the second half of season 5 of _The Shield_ was delayed until early April. HBO's _Rome_ second season starts this Sunday. The following Sunday BSG and the Dresden Files series take over Sunday evening, too.

Friday:
Saw Harry & the Potters. Worked on looping a foundsound segment but the recording device failed so I lost two hours of work. Pfui. The experimentation was useful, though.

Took some more pictures of scorpions Friday night, need to convert them.

Saturday:
I spent all day working on music looping a foundsound segment, then working with Stick and theremin, then [info]aklikins came over for almost two hours of jamming (see Phasmatodea for our collaborative music project). Then [info]dollraves brought A. over for another two hours of improv music: [info]aklikins on Parker Fly and raft of effects, me on Chapman Stick and larger raft of effects, A. with acoustic guitar and no effects. Worked nicely.

Tested the portable recording setup (Giant Squid Audio Labs mic with Gemini iKey). Really need to get the appropriate adapters to use the K&K pre-amp in between the two: the existing setup works but is unusable due to low levels. Nothing's captured. The mic has a stereo 1/8" jack, the Gemini iKey has phono sockets, and the K&K has two 1/4" sockets. Need to get to Radio Shack / Guitar Center and play mix-and-match with the cables until I get a functioning signal chain, and do it before next Saturday hopefully.

Sunday:
Nice brunch at Humble Pie. On our way to brunch yesterday we noticed that Firefly on Glenwood South is going out of business. They're having a huge sale. Shoe enthusiasts, converge upon the remaining Fluevogs, Vans, and such.

Had wanted to get over to Durham early enough to look inside the Nasher when they were open, but this did not happen. Dinner at Pop's in Durham between the alien films.

Now then what to do today? M wanted to go to Fish Pros today to talk about the aquarium and to go to Firefly for the sale, but no other plans and we both have the day off. Suggestions?

:) That was a sneak preview, as I posted about Thursday night ( http://badger.livejournal.com/1084103.html ). It opens this coming Friday at Galaxy in Cary, and the Colony (by far my preference) in north Raleigh. Possibly Carolina in Durham, and (at a guess) the Chelsea in Chapel Hill might well get it too.

Sorry. No local Fluevog dealer anymore. And I thought this was a thriving metropolis. Pfui.

there's a store in durham that may still carry them. 503 South or something like that? the place downtown that is half of the remnants of the untidy museum/ooh la latte breakup?

The 305 South place, right. I wish they'd book more interesting shows.
