The End of Cinematics, again Tonight M and I went to Chapel Hill and Memorial Hall to see the second night of Mikel Rouse's show The End of Cinematics (first show review.)
Much better crowd than Thursday night. M thought the show was very layered, very dense, and understood why I liked the show so much.
Thursday I was front row, exact center. Tonight we had the left end of the center section, front row. One of the comments Rouse made in the Q&A was that he thinks the show is different from every seat because of the three-dimensional nature of the performance which a two-dimensional film doesn't shift from different perspectives in the same way, and he hopes there are no bad seats.
Considers the easy availability of cheap effective gear makes it possible to develop new forms of art, and hopes people are out there doing so. Called this time a "zeitgeist moment" of possibility.
Described the work as "about the stranglehold of corporate entertainment".
Q about the film trailers, why? He has several reasons, but one is that film trailers are familiar, are present for setting the tone (Ed.: For the second time today I'm reminded of Leary's adage of "Dosage, Set, and Setting".) The popcorn and soda and candy are not normal for the venues he's performing this work in, and he's grateful for the venues' cooperation. The film trailers are to manage the audiences' expectations, that they are "not spending a lifetime with art" (with a capital A).
Q for the actors: What's the biggest challenge with this performance versus traditional theatre performances? A from the newest member of the company: All the stimulus around you, plus the scrim isolates the cast, at least partially, from the audience. Plus the in-ear monitors both isolate the members by focusing them inward on the music (complex time signatures) and connect the members to each other - the in-ear monitors let the members hear each other so they can sing in harmony.
Worked with the lighting designer as the film editor - back to the 2-D and 3-D thing.
Used Dataton software ( http://www.dataton.com/ ) to control and sync up everything as much as is done.
